Save The Date! August 9th – 2nd Annual NCR Picnic
Registration is open!
The North Carolina Region Picnic will be held on August 9, 2014 in NE Guilford County, at North East Park, 4010 High Rock Road, Gibsonville. We’ll get started about 9am and have the park until 8pm. We have secured the use of one of the shelters, which will accommodate about 50. This is a large park with several features that should be of interest to all ages of your family…a Carousel, miniature Golf, and ball fields of many types. There is also an aquatic center for your swimming enjoyment.

VIR Spring Sprints – April 18th – 20th, 2014
SPRING HAS ARRIVED!
The long cold winter is finally over and spring is here! What better way to celebrate the arrival of spring than a trip to VIR for the Spring Sprints. Three wonderful days of The Majors. The 2014 SCCA National Convention was held in Charlotte, NC on March 7-9. Attending, on behalf of the NC Region was Mark Senior. Following are his notes on the sessions he attended:
Risk Management session – SCCA National wants all forms electronically. NCR needs to check on what damage at our events is covered, as we may be able to claim things like track damage. Things which may be damaged, such as Armco, are covered. Their comment was, “When in doubt, send it in”. There are deductibles to take into account. In order to make a claim, NCR needs to complete incident reports and needs someone to fill them out. There is also an event request form for coverage of meetings and other non-competitive events. It was also noted that if we hire anyone to work for us, we need to get a certificate of insurance.
New Start Stand at VIR
The old Start stand, which had stood in front of the Control Tower on the front straight since VIR reopened in 2000, is no more. It was torn down on November 6th and the trees at Pit Out are gone as well. This was done to make room for a widening of pit road.

North Carolina Region Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner 2013
The annual meeting of the North Carolina Region was held in conjunction with the 2013 Awards Dinner at Caffé Luna in Raleigh, on January 11th. About a hundred members attended and the festivities were in high gear. Just as last year, the food was excellent and the first order of business was to thank Bibi Tucker Harrison, wife of outgoing Member-at-Large Neal Harrison, for having arranged everything. A “banquet committee” of one, she did another outstanding job. Many thanks to Bibi!
North Carolina Region Awards 2013
Volunteers
Before we began with our awards to our volunteers, who have gone above and beyond this year, we pointed out the North Carolina Region members lauded for the many days of service in the December issue of SportsCar?
Treasurer and Steward Steve Keadle topped the list with over 30 days, followed by Member-at-Large and Steward Wayne Quick, with over 20 days. Wayne’s wife and Chief of Sound Control for our events, Jean Quick volunteered between 12 and 19 days at the track, as did our Chief Starter James Buckberry, and one of our Flag Chiefs, Mark Biamonte. Awesome folks! Hat’s off to you all!

Members-at-Large – Heather Powers and Blair Stitt
There were 183 valid ballots returned. That’s just over 25% of the membership.

Rex Deffenbaugh, incumbent, running for re-election as Regional Executive
I’m Rex T. Deffenbaugh, the incumbent Regional Executive for North Carolina Region and current competitor. I’m running for my third term in this office. I have served for over 15 years on the Board in many capacities. As RE, I have never missed a Board meeting in person in 4 years. Because of this I have amassed a great deal of experience in operating the Region. My years on the Board have led to a number of great relationships with National, South East Division and other Regional Administrators, which facilitates the communication we need to continue putting on great events. This has allowed us to continue running races such as the SARRC/MARRS despite budget constraints and policy changes in both Regions. While RE, we successfully put on our first race in the new Majors program. We have worked to ensure the Region comes in as close to breakeven as possible each year, coming within $1,500 on a budget of more than $250,000. This ensures we keep racing costs down in a less than ideal economy. I hope you will vote for me to continue running this Region and keeping us on track.
Sara Snider, running for Regional Executive
This is Sara Snider. I have been a member of our Region since 1985. I have had the opportunity to see us in good and bad times. Watching our Region grow has been a great blessing. I believe we go thru cycles in our life and our Region is no different. Our Club is directly affected by the economy and the past several years have been difficult for our Region.
We need to take a close look at the product we are offering our drivers. Formats that have worked well in the past for us need to be revised. We need to streamline our programs, offer more time on track, and provide a quality product at a reasonable cost to our drivers. Maybe there are ways we can incorporate other clubs the opportunity to join us in an event and make it fun for all. We need to look at our worker base. We have always had some of the most qualified workers in SCCA. What can we do to help them and make us stronger?
