Good weather! Good food! Good friends! And vintage cars!
The North Carolina Region held its third annual picnic at North East Park in Gibsonville on Saturday the 8th of August and it was a blast. The weather couldn’t have been better, sunny, in the low 80’s, and no humidity to speak of, thanks to thunderstorms earlier in the week. The food was fabulous! Master Griller (and Chief Starter) James Buckberry (left) served up both hamburgers and hot dogs, with all the fixin’s. (I had two myself!) Barbecue chef (and Worker of the Year) Pete Romanowski prepared his most excellent pork and beans with green peppers and other secret ingredients, which literally got rave reviews. And everybody else brought an assortment of chips, potato salad, cole slaw, snacks, cookies, and even cake! We had over 35 people so there was lots of food. We ate well!

For those interested in experiencing what it’s like to drive on track at speed, Tarheel Sports Car Club (THSCC) is hosting a HPDE/PDX event on VIR’s Full Course on September 12-13. THSCC puts on a fun, well organized event and has run groups for all levels of experience from complete novices to experienced track junkies looking for more seat time or to shake down a new car. SCCA members get a discount with the code “NCR2015”. Early Bird registration ends this Friday! They will also be hosting a Rally Cross the same weekend at VIR plus a competition on the Go-Cart Track. Nissan Signs On as VIR’s Official Auto Partner in Multi-Year Agreement

Isn’t it time you tried an Autocross?
What an event! What a venue! Ever consider trying out autocross? Well, you should! The pair just put on by the Cape Fear Chapter at Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point is a good example why. It’s been 30 years since I, the Membership Chair, ran an autocross, so I should have registered as a novice, but there were so many Novice Class entrants, that I thought I’d have an easier time if I ran my box-stock Miata in E Street. Wrong! Those Cape Fear folks know how to treat novices right.
ATTENTION DRIVERS: RULE CHANGE!!!
This is a notification to all competitors in SCCA of a change/addition to the rule requiring the weight of the car being posted on the sides of the car to be visible to the operator of the scales being used at impound. For years now the rule as published, has allowed those running in eleven (11) classes to exempt themselves from the rule based on the fact that the entire class has the same minimum weight. Actually, this is not true as several of the listed classes allowed exemption have 2 or more weights. In most of the classes that this occurs, nothing about the appearance of the car would be apparent to the scale operator that the car on the scale should weigh differently than another same class car. Only by going to the class rules can one ascertain that there are different engines used in the class and that there should be no reason for the exemption from the rule to post the weight of the car on it’s sides. If you are racing in ASR, 750 lbs is shown as the least your car can weight, but there is a chart for 6 other engines that are allowed in the class that all have a different weight. Formula Fords have 2 weights shown based on engines and Formula Mazda use 2 different engines that allow them to weigh differently. All of the versions of SRF that we now run together have different weights and should be off of the exemption list but they do at least require markings on the roll structure of the car that should allow the scale operator a way of figuring out which of the two weights that SRF sitting on the scale should be using.
NCR Annual Meeting & Awards Dinner
The North Carolina Region’s Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner was held on Saturday evening, January 10th, at the Coastline Conference and Event Center in downtown Wilmington. 93 Members attended. Kudos to Elizabeth Severt and John Byers, who did a fabulous job of organizing the event!
The first item on the agenda was a brief business meeting, conducted by RE Rex Deffenbaugh, who gave his annual “State of the Region” report and introduced the Board members who were in attendance, including the only new member on the Board, Assistant RE Mike Spencer.
